Price of Freedom

Written by Doug Goodman. September 2005.

"9 Parts of Desire"1, a play that grips your heart
Showing lives of women, to rip the veil apart
How else could we see, amid such misery
The possibility that someone there could be "free"

We're shown the dark side of servitude to masters whose hearts are cold
Who live in castles with cornerstones of lives they bought and sold
A war against the tyrant offers no guarantee
Battle cries in silence, no voice of victory

Not all who's lives are limited have shackles on their feet
Not all who have their liberty are living truly free

There's a price for freedom
Not earned by guns or tanks
The currency that sets us free
Cannot be found in banks
Yes, there's a price of freedom
We can't afford, some say
The currency that sets us free
Is awfully hard to pay
The chains that hold us captive
Are not imposed by men
Throughout our history
True freedom lies within

There's more than one side to stories we are told
More than one side to truths we hold

Not all who's lives are limited have shackles on their feet
Not all who have their liberty are truly free

Yes, there's a price of freedom
That's still within our reach
Nothing you can legislate
Nothing you can teach
The chains that hold us captive
The battle we must win
Is fought down in our soul
True freedom lies, true freedom lies, true freedoms lies...within

1 The lyrics were partially inspired by the play "9 Parts of Desire", which portrays the lives of Iraqi women over the last 20 years, written and performed by Heather Raffo.
